A Daily Devotional for Difficult Times

·4 min read

Difficult seasons have a way of distorting our perspective. What once felt manageable suddenly seems overwhelming. Hope that seemed close now feels far.

This devotional is for those days — the ones where getting out of bed is an act of courage.

The Honest Cry

One of the most comforting things about the Psalms is how honest they are. Psalm 22 begins:

My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? Why are you so far from saving me, so far from my cries of anguish?

This is not doubt. This is prayer. The psalmist does not pretend things are fine. He names the anguish and brings it to God. And by the end of the same psalm, something has shifted — not the circumstances, but the perspective.

You are allowed to be honest with God. He can handle it.

He Has Not Despised Your Suffering

A few verses later in Psalm 22:

For he has not despised or scorned the suffering of the afflicted one; he has not hidden his face from him but has listened to his cry for help.

In your difficult season, God is not looking away. He is not indifferent. He is not waiting for you to get yourself together before He pays attention.

He is listening.

One Step at a Time

The Prophet Elijah, after one of the greatest acts of faith in the Old Testament, collapsed under a tree and asked God to take his life (1 Kings 19:4). He was exhausted. Burned out. Done.

What did God do? He sent an angel with food and water and said: "Get up and eat, for the journey is too great for you."

Not a lecture. Not a rebuke. Bread and rest. And then a gentle nudge: get up.

Your journey forward today might be one small thing. Bread and rest, and one step.

A Reflection

What is the one honest thing you need to say to God today? You do not need to dress it up or frame it theologically. Just say it.

And then sit in the quiet for a moment, and let Him respond.

A Prayer for Today

Father, I am struggling. I will not pretend otherwise. I do not fully understand what you are doing, but I trust that you have not forgotten me. Help me take one step today. Provide what I need for this part of the journey. And when I cannot feel your presence, help me choose to trust your promise. Amen.

"The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit." — Psalm 34:18
